What to Expect on a Marketing Placement

It’s always a bit daunting starting a work placement. Whether you’re still studying or taking that first step on the career ladder, dipping your toe into the working world is something that lots of people find difficult. However, I can confidently say it’s not as scary as you imagine, and I’d definitely recommend it! It’s a brilliant opportunity for you to meet new people, gain valuable experience and get a taste of a career you might want to pursue.

You may be a small fish in a big, unknown pool, but try and remember that almost everyone has been in the same shoes as you at some point: trying to figure out what your future looks like. During my work placement at Bewonder*, I’ve had the chance to gain some useful skills and work on many exciting projects! Here’s a little insight into what I’ve been up to so far:

Event planning – One of the main components of my role has been helping to organise and deliver events for our clients. This has included family friendly days like Grow Your Own, Pirate Tales and One Great Day with Great Ormond Street. I’ve been liaising with staff on-site, and attending the events to make sure everything runs smoothly on the day! It’s been great fun to meet new people and build relationships in this creative way.

Press releases – I’ve also had the opportunity to write press releases and event reports for our clients. This has allowed me to further enhance my writing skills, and vary my tone according to the demographic.

Client Services – I’ve been working closely with on three specific schemes in client services. This has entailed everything from catching up with retailers and building rapport, to assisting with summer events! This was a first for me, but it’s been a fantastic change to develop both my communication and organisation skills.

Strategy/ campaign planning – As the new strategy year approaches, I’ve had the opportunity to work on the creative side of things! I’ve looked back at our previous successful strategies, and helped with campaign planning, to find new, adventurous ways to engage our customers.

Without my placement at Bewonder*, I wouldn’t have worked on this breadth of projects or gained this crucial experience, and I’ve met some fantastic people along the way. So maybe placements aren’t that scary after all…
