Purple Tuesday: What does accessibility mean for you?

Purple Tuesday arrives today with the aim of bringing greater awareness to the challenges shoppers with disabilities face in shopping centres, retail parks and town centres.

As we’re the experts in retail experience (and love purple!), naturally we wanted to help champion this cause and contribute to raising awareness and supporting Purple Tuesday.

It is the first awareness initiative of its kind for shopping centres and retailers to acknowledge how they currently support people with visible and non-visible disabilities, and how they can assist further.

Almost 20% of adults in the UK have a disability and 80% of those have an invisible or hidden impairment. Purple Tuesday is all about providing the best customer service and accessibility we can to everyone, regardless of how they experience the world – 4 out of 5 people with disabilities require support whilst shopping, so it’s important that the correct facilities are available to them when needed.

Making simple adjustments in stores and shopping centres can open up new opportunities for those with disabilities to feel much more comfortable when out and about, lessening the anxiety some may feel when planning their day.

We often take for granted the ease with which we can navigate life, and forget to accommodate for those with different needs, so we reached out to people experiencing these everyday difficulties and asked them to share their experiences and challenges in taking part in everyday activities.
