The Challenge
13 billion plastic bags are used in the UK annually, with shoppers worldwide estimated to use approximately 500 billion single-use plastic bags per year. We were challenged to create a campaign that would inspire and educate people with regards to their plastic use in an engaging and informative way.
Our Solution
Break the Bag Habit encompassed three different initiatives which together educated, engaged, and ultimately changed the habits of shoppers and retailers. A UK shopping centre first, the campaign saw Churchill Square retailers remove plastic bags in store for World Environment Day 2019, replacing them with ethically produced, centre-branded tote bags.
Our results
- 88% retailer engagement
- 1,248,735 PR reach
- 2.7% footfall increase YoY

“Break the Bag Habit was a powerful campaign at the forefront of change that aligned with our portfolio social value and sustainability goals. An initiative that educated, engaged and changed the way our customers and retailers think about their own use of plastic. The response was incredible from our customers, and to have encouraged a number of retailers to make permanent changes is a true testament to Bewonder*’s creativity.”
